The Voux: worth it for polished magazines, not flexible builds

The Voux is a style-led magazine theme that earns its place when presentation matters more than simplicity. It is aimed at fashion, lifestyle, news, travel, and image-heavy editorial sites, with multiple homepage demos, article layouts, post grids, sliders, galleries, infinite loading, sponsored posts, advertising options, social sharing, and WooCommerce support. The result is a theme that can make a new publication look established quickly, especially if your content is built around large photography, category landing pages, and magazine-style navigation.

The strongest part of The Voux is still its visual system. Its layouts have a clear editorial hierarchy, and the theme offers more useful publishing controls than a basic blog template. You can choose different layouts for category, tag, archive, search, and author pages, while the post-grid tools include load more, infinite scroll, category filters, and AJAX tabs. It also includes practical publishing features such as sponsored posts, ad placements, article sharing options, image hotspots, shop-the-look content, and video monetization. For a fashion or lifestyle publication, those details are more valuable than another generic hero banner.

It is also more actively maintained than its age might suggest. The theme was created more than a decade ago, but the published changelog lists version 7.0.4 on September 7, 2026, including WooCommerce template and WPBakery updates. The product page also lists compatibility with current WordPress releases, Gutenberg, WooCommerce, WPML, Contact Form 7, Gravity Forms, Elementor, and Events Calendar. That does not make it a modern block theme, however: WPBakery and the theme’s required companion plugin remain central to the intended workflow.

Where The Voux is weak

The main annoyance is dependency and complexity. The Voux’s content widgets, theme options, and demo-driven layouts encourage you to stay inside its framework. That is convenient during setup but less attractive when redesigning, changing themes, or trying to keep a site lightweight. Gutenberg compatibility is useful, but it is not the same as being designed around native blocks. Elementor is listed as compatible, yet the theme’s own documentation and feature presentation clearly center on WPBakery, so buyers should not expect an Elementor-first experience.

Performance deserves a cautious approach. An older independent test reported a 318 KB CSS file, slow demo loading, failed demo imports on an initial attempt, and front-end editor failures. Those findings predate the latest updates, so they should not be treated as a current benchmark, but they identify the risks of importing a large demo and enabling every widget. The Voux can be made usable with sensible image sizes, caching, and selective features; it is not the theme I would choose for a speed-sensitive site that wants the smallest possible stack.

How it compares

Compared with Newspaper, The Voux feels more refined and fashion-oriented, while Newspaper offers a broader news ecosystem and more aggressive publishing tools. Jannah is a closer alternative for content-heavy sites with reviews, social features, and news layouts. GeneratePress and Astra are better choices if you want a lighter foundation and plan to design the publication yourself with blocks or a page builder. The Voux wins when its demos already resemble your target site; otherwise, its bundled framework is more baggage than benefit. Buy it for the finished editorial look, not because it is the most flexible or fastest WordPress foundation.
