Paid Memberships Pro Downloads is worth it for one specific job: attaching protected files to membership levels and presenting them as links, buttons, cards, or a simple library. It registers a dedicated Downloads content type, stores files outside the normal public uploads path, and uses PMPro’s access rules to decide whether a visitor gets the file or a join-or-upgrade call to action. That is a sensible feature for a member portal, resource vault, template library, or paid document site.

The strongest part is the protection model. A file is not merely hidden behind a shortcode while remaining available at a predictable uploads URL. PMPro’s restricted-file system serves it through an authenticated download handler instead. You can assign one or more membership levels to each download, show locked items to non-members, and send them to the relevant checkout page. The add-on also gives you a useful library shortcode and block, with list or grid layouts, three presentation templates, and controls for sorting and limiting results.

There are important constraints, however. The current documentation requires PMPro 3.7 or newer and the WordPress block editor for creating downloads. The add-on is not compatible with the Classic Editor plugin or page builders for the creation screen, although its shortcodes can still display downloads in those environments. Each Download post holds one file, so a complicated resource bundle may require multiple entries or a different plugin. There is also no per-user download limit, and the documentation states that the add-on currently exposes no public action or filter hooks of its own. Those omissions matter if you want expiring links, download quotas, usage reporting, or deep custom integrations.

Cost is the other catch. This is a premium PMPro add-on, and the official pricing page currently lists the Standard plan at $49 per month, with higher plans adding more sites, add-ons, support, or hosting capacity. That can be reasonable if you are already committed to PMPro’s broader membership toolkit, but it is hard to justify solely for file protection. Download Monitor is a better fit when your priority is managing a file catalog and tracking downloads. Easy Digital Downloads is the obvious alternative when files are products that need payments, licensing, purchase records, or customer entitlements. MemberPress is also a more natural comparison for a broader membership system with downloadable resources, though its exact file workflow may require a separate extension or integration.

Verdict: buy it when PMPro already controls your subscriptions and you want uncomplicated, properly protected member files. Skip it for a standalone download business or any site that needs serious catalog management, reporting, quotas, or digital-commerce features.
