Paid Memberships Pro: worth it for MemberPress migrations

The verdict Paid Memberships Pro is worth choosing if you are leaving MemberPress and want a capable membership system with a real migration path, especially for Stripe-based subscriptions and larger member databases. It is not a painless one-click replacement: the migration toolkit is still marked beta, and complex restrictions, add-ons, custom fields, and payment settings still require careful testing and follow-up.

Paid Memberships Pro is worth it mainly when you have a clear reason to move away from MemberPress. It is a serious membership platform rather than a thin content-locking plugin, with recurring payments, one-time pricing, trials, coupons, member accounts, reports, custom fields, and integrations for tools such as WooCommerce, BuddyPress, BuddyBoss, bbPress, LearnDash, and Mailchimp.

The strongest reason to consider it now is the official MemberPress Migration Toolkit. The add-on provides a guided wizard inside WordPress and can convert MemberPress products into PMPro membership levels, import users and orders, preserve membership start and end dates, and migrate several common content restrictions. It also uses Action Scheduler for background processing, which is more appropriate for large databases than a single browser request that can time out.

Stripe users get an especially useful migration route. PMPro documents a method for connecting through Stripe API keys so it can manage existing MemberPress-created subscriptions without the connected-application conflict that can occur when using Stripe Connect. That is valuable because cancelling and recreating hundreds of subscriptions is both risky and disruptive. It is still not a magic switch: webhooks must be configured correctly, and the site needs a complete backup and a staging test before touching live billing.

Where Paid Memberships Pro is genuinely strong

PMPro has unusually broad flexibility for a WordPress membership plugin. You can create unlimited membership levels, let members hold multiple levels, collect different fields by level, sell recurring or fixed-term access, and restrict posts, pages, categories, blocks, and custom post types. Developers also get extensive hooks, REST API support, debugging tools, and bulk-processing utilities. The core plugin is free, and its setup wizard can generate the nine standard membership pages in five steps.

The ecosystem is another advantage. Compared with Restrict Content Pro, PMPro offers a deeper current add-on catalogue and a particularly strong migration and integration story. Compared with WooCommerce Memberships, it is the more natural choice when memberships are the main product rather than an extension of a shop. Compared with MemberPress, PMPro is more open and modular, but that modularity means more configuration decisions.

Where it is weak or annoying

The most important warning is that the MemberPress Migration Toolkit is explicitly marked beta. PMPro’s own documentation says to back up the database and test on staging. The toolkit does not remove every migration task: custom post type restrictions, drip content, VAT handling, and other specialized features may require additional add-ons or rebuilding. PMPro’s older migration guide also says content protections may need to be updated manually, so do not assume every rule will map perfectly.

Cost is also less simple than the free core suggests. The migration add-on is free, but premium functionality is distributed across paid add-ons; the current Standard plan is listed at $49 per month or $499 per year for one site with premium add-ons and support. That can be good value for a business that needs the ecosystem, but excessive for a small site that only needs a login and one protected page.

Verdict: choose PMPro for a planned MemberPress migration when you can use staging, verify payments, and accept some manual cleanup. For a brand-new, very simple membership site, start with the free core and add only what you need; for a completely hands-off experience, choose a hosted alternative instead.

Questions people ask

Can Paid Memberships Pro migrate MemberPress members?
Yes. Its MemberPress Migration Toolkit can migrate membership levels, users, orders, dates, and several common content restrictions. The toolkit is currently marked beta, so test the process on a staging site first.
Does Paid Memberships Pro preserve MemberPress Stripe subscriptions?
It can optionally migrate active Stripe subscriptions. PMPro recommends using Stripe API keys during this type of migration because Stripe Connect may conflict with the existing MemberPress connection.
Is Paid Memberships Pro free?
The core plugin and the MemberPress Migration Toolkit are free. Many advanced features are delivered through premium add-ons, and the current Standard plan includes those add-ons and support for one site.
Is Paid Memberships Pro better than MemberPress?
It is better for owners who value a flexible, developer-friendly ecosystem and want an official migration route. MemberPress can be the simpler choice if you are starting from scratch and prefer a more packaged product.
Does Paid Memberships Pro migrate all MemberPress content rules automatically?
No. Common page, post, category, tag, and parent-page restrictions are supported, but specialized restrictions and add-on features may need separate PMPro add-ons or manual rebuilding.

Paid Memberships Pro Extra Expiration Warning Emails: worth it for expiring memberships Paid Memberships Pro Extra Expiration Warning Emails is worth using if your members renew manually or routinely miss fixed expiration dates. It is a narrow, dependable add-on, but its lack of a settings screen and dependence on custom code make it poor value for sites wanting sophisticated renewal automation. Situational Paid Memberships Pro: worth it for flexible memberships, not turnkey VAT compliance Paid Memberships Pro is worth using if you want a flexible, developer-friendly membership system with a genuinely capable free core. It is not worth buying solely for automated EU VAT compliance: the VAT Add On calculates checkout tax and validates some VAT numbers, but rates are maintained as constants and unusual or reduced-rate situations require custom code and accounting advice. Situational Tutor LMS Pro: worth it for course creators, not every LMS project Tutor LMS Pro is worth buying if you want a polished WordPress course platform with frontend course creation, quizzes, assignments, drip content, certificates, and built-in selling tools. It is less compelling for universities, complex corporate training systems, or developers who want the most mature ecosystem and the fewest compatibility risks. The Individual plan is $199 per year for one site, which is reasonable when you will actively use several Pro add-ons. Situational Paid Memberships Pro: worth using, but drip content costs extra Paid Memberships Pro is worth using for serious WordPress membership sites because its free core handles unlimited members and levels, content restriction, checkout, recurring payments, and a broad extension ecosystem. It is especially strong when you want control, integrations, and a low-cost way to validate a membership business, but the advertised drip-content workflow is not part of the free core and requires the premium Series add-on. Choose MemberPress for a smoother all-in-one setup; choose Paid Memberships Pro when flexibility and a capable free foundation matter more. Recommended
