Perfmatters: worth buying for script control, not caching

Perfmatters is a performance control panel, not a traditional page-caching plugin. Its main job is to stop WordPress, themes, and plugins from loading unnecessary CSS, JavaScript, embeds, emojis, WooCommerce assets, and third-party code on every URL. The standout feature is Script Manager, which lets you disable individual files or entire plugin assets everywhere, on a current URL, by post type, by device, or for logged-in and logged-out users.

That distinction matters. Perfmatters can reduce the number of requests and the amount of code a browser processes, but it does not solve slow uncached PHP requests by itself. The developer’s own documentation recommends using a separate caching solution such as WP Rocket, WP Fastest Cache, Super Page Cache for Cloudflare, LiteSpeed Cache, or server-level caching. If you do not already have reliable page caching, WP Rocket or FlyingPress is the better first purchase.

Where Perfmatters is genuinely strong

The Script Manager is the reason to buy it. Contact Form 7, social-sharing tools, sliders, page-builder widgets, and WooCommerce assets commonly load on pages where they are not needed. Perfmatters lets you remove those assets from the homepage or other irrelevant URLs without uninstalling the plugin. It can also show script dependencies, use regular expressions, and provide a testing mode so changes can be checked before visitors see them.

WooCommerce controls are particularly practical. The plugin can disable WooCommerce scripts and styles across the site while preserving them on product, shop, category, cart, checkout, and account pages. It also includes a setting for cart fragments, which the documentation says can create delays of up to 10 seconds on some large stores when the request is unnecessary.

Other useful features include delayed and deferred JavaScript, unused-CSS removal, lazy loading, local Google Analytics, CDN URL rewriting, preconnect and DNS-prefetch controls, disabling WordPress features such as embeds and emojis, and speculative loading. Its unused-CSS feature offers inline, external-file, delay, async, and remove behaviors; the developer recommends the external-file method for better repeat-visit performance.

Where it is weak or annoying

The powerful settings create real maintenance work. “Delay all scripts” is explicitly the aggressive option, and the documentation lists exclusions for mobile menus, sliders, galleries, cookie tools, Elementor, Avada, Astra, and other common setups. A broken menu or checkout is a more serious problem than a mediocre PageSpeed score, so you need staging, browser testing, and a willingness to inspect console errors and dependencies.

The interface is also more technical than the marketing suggests. Script Manager is accessed from the front-end admin bar or by adding ?perfmatters to a URL, rather than from the normal plugin settings screen. Automatic unused-CSS processing may require clearing multiple cache layers after design changes, and aggressive CSS removal can cause visual pop-in or missing styles.

How it compares

WP Rocket is the safer single-plugin choice for most small business sites because it combines page caching, cache preloading, file optimization, media controls, and database cleanup. FlyingPress is another stronger all-in-one alternative when you want aggressive Core Web Vitals optimization with less manual asset management. LiteSpeed Cache is the obvious budget choice on LiteSpeed hosting, especially when its server-level cache and QUIC.cloud services are available.

Perfmatters makes more sense beside those tools than instead of them.
