AutomateWoo Birthdays Add-on: worth it only if you already use AutomateWoo

The verdict AutomateWoo Birthdays Add-on is worth buying for WooCommerce stores already invested in AutomateWoo and selling products where a timely birthday offer can drive repeat purchases. It is not worth buying as a standalone birthday-email solution: the $49 yearly add-on requires AutomateWoo, only collects birthdays from logged-in customers, and cannot import existing birthday data without custom development.

AutomateWoo Birthdays Add-on does one narrow job well: it adds birthday data and birthday-based automation to AutomateWoo, WooCommerce’s broader marketing workflow plugin. You can collect an optional birthday during checkout or in the customer’s My Account area, then trigger an email before, on, or after that date. The email itself is built in AutomateWoo, so you can use customer variables, add images or GIFs, segment by customer value, and attach a personalized WooCommerce coupon.

The strongest part is its integration with AutomateWoo’s existing workflow system. This is not limited to a single annual “happy birthday” message. The add-on adds a Customer Birthday trigger, a birthday variable, and Customer – Next Birthday Date and Customer – Last Birthday Date rules. That lets you create different offers for VIP customers, send a win-back email when a birthday is approaching, or add birthday timing to an abandoned-cart campaign. For stores already using AutomateWoo, this is cleaner than stitching together a form plugin, an email platform, and custom date-based logic.

There are also sensible privacy controls. The birthday field is optional, and you can choose not to collect the year of birth, storing only the month and day. WooCommerce’s documentation also explains that the birthday field appears only to logged-in customers who have not already supplied a date. That restriction is important: guest shoppers will not gradually build your birthday list unless your checkout process encourages account creation.

The main weakness is the product’s narrow dependency chain. The add-on costs $49 for a one-year plan, but it cannot work without AutomateWoo, which is a separate purchase. If you only want to send one birthday coupon, that combined cost is difficult to justify. A dedicated extension such as Birthday Discount Coupon for WooCommerce offers birthday fields, configurable coupon restrictions, email customization, and timing controls without requiring AutomateWoo’s wider automation platform. Birthday Coupons for WooCommerce is another more focused alternative and can support guest-user birthday collection.

Data migration is another annoyance. WooCommerce documents that birthdays cannot currently be imported from another field or plugin through the normal interface; moving existing data requires a custom migration script or developer code. There is also no dedicated birthday export screen. The data is stored in WordPress user metadata, which is workable for developers but inconvenient for merchants who want to audit or move their list.

Compared with MailPoet, AutomateWoo Birthdays is the better fit when the campaign needs WooCommerce customer rules, coupon generation, order history, or other store events. MailPoet is more attractive when your audience lives primarily in a newsletter list: its birthday automation uses a date custom field, supports CSV-imported birthday data, and can send on a configurable schedule. For a store already paying for AutomateWoo, Birthdays is a well-integrated and flexible upgrade. For everyone else, a standalone birthday coupon plugin or MailPoet is usually the more economical choice.

Questions people ask

Does AutomateWoo Birthdays work without AutomateWoo?
No. It is an AutomateWoo add-on and requires the main AutomateWoo plugin to be installed and active.
Can AutomateWoo Birthdays collect birthdays from guest customers?
No. The built-in birthday fields are shown to logged-in customers at checkout or in My Account, so guest shoppers are not covered by the normal collection process.
Can I import birthdays from another plugin?
Not through a built-in importer. WooCommerce says importing existing birthday data requires a custom migration script or developer code.
Can I send a coupon with the birthday email?
Yes. You create a personalized WooCommerce coupon in the AutomateWoo workflow and insert it into the birthday email using AutomateWoo’s coupon variable.

Thrive Leads: worth it for serious list building, not simple popups Thrive Leads is worth buying if email capture is a central part of your WordPress business and you will use targeting, form experiments, lead reports, or asset delivery. It is overkill for a basic newsletter box, and its editor and caching requirements can create more maintenance than lighter plugins. Choose it over Bloom or Convert Pro when optimization matters more than simplicity, but choose OptinMonster when you want a hosted system with less WordPress-specific troubleshooting. Situational Paid Memberships Pro: worth using if you already run MailerLite The Paid Memberships Pro MailerLite integration is worth using for membership sites already committed to MailerLite: it handles level-based groups, membership changes, profile updates, and double opt-in without an automation platform in the middle. It is not a complete marketing system, though, and it is a poor reason to choose Paid Memberships Pro or MailerLite by itself because existing members require a separate CSV import and the add-on has fewer subscriber-consent features than PMPro’s Mailchimp integration. Situational WPC Smart Thank You Page: worth it for targeted post-purchase campaigns WPC Smart Thank You Page is worth buying if your WooCommerce store needs different post-purchase experiences, coupon automation, or survey tracking tied to specific orders. It is overkill for a basic branded confirmation page, where WooCommerce settings, a page builder, or a simpler redirect plugin can do the job with less complexity. Situational Real Testimonials Pro: worth it for serious review collection Real Testimonials Pro is worth paying for if testimonials are an active part of your marketing and you need to collect, moderate, filter, and display them in several formats. It is overkill for a site that only needs a few manually entered quotes, where the free version or a simpler plugin such as Strong Testimonials will usually be the better buy. Situational
